So I Couldnt convince the employer to allow me to work out of Washington State....dissapointing I tell you. Working @ the corporate office is however, interesting. At least I am making decisions that have a long term effect on this organization's growth...that feels good I think?

I have been tasked with taking all 47 of our satellite offices and upgrading them with t-1 lines, and implementing VOIP company wide, plus designing the 3 rural wisp networks. So while I don't exactly have all the time in the world to be going out, Portland is not interesting. Maybe if I actually go out to the bars, spend some time with old freinds...I might change my mind. I really just want to be home.....but where is that? I was hoping I could convince them to allow me to move to at least san francisco :)

This company has given me an immmense workload though which I really am enjoying.......already thinking about vacation!

On another note, i made some new tracks. One i havent titled yet, but i think it is the best track I have written yet. hit me up @ jeffthomas@fastmail.fm if you would like a copy.

-
Chili

thank you for calling microsoft we are pointing and laughing at you, support

(ATTN- fellow freinds who work for microsoft- dont take this personally, this is not directed at you if you work at microsoft, I am sure that you love your job and the nice, climate controlled, work enviorment. And remember, every day, your company is making 100-1000 times more per hour for the work you do. But thats okay, because you dont need the money, bill does so he can save starving children in some small part of some place in africa (so he doesnt pay his earnings in taxes, and people think he is such a nice guy )

thank you for calling microsoft technical support. If you are a business customer, and would like to pay more money, to have 20 year old kids read the knowledge base for you, press 1. We know you have no choice but to use our products, thats why its 300.00 per call. if we can't solve the problem, we will make sure to take 5 months to post it to your account, because well, we can.

If you are calling about your MSN dsl account, that for some reason we could never figure out how or why its not working, but you still have to pay us anyways, even though you never transfered a packet of data on our network, just hang up, your fucked. We are a delaware corporation, try to sue. I know 1500 dollars in fees sounds like a lot to you, but we wipe our ass with that kind of money every 1.2 seconds. We still wont give you a refund. Feel free to call, we would be glad to give you the run around and tell you that tech support has to approve the credit, then customer care, no wait! tech support! call them! you understand, we have to put our kids through private school, and buy them lear jets for their 6th birthday. Kids are expensive, especially if you grow up in bellevue.

We promise if you give us more money, that we will run you around in circles, because our support staff really dont work for us anyways, they work out of the back of a shed in south dakota. They can at least read however. Childrens books, but they can read. We love outsourcing, because then we don't actually have to talk to customers. Customers suck, especially because they could tell us how to make our product better, we just want to hook up intel you know, by making more bloated software.

After you have given us some money, remember ( we want all of it ) for free you can access the microsoft knowledge base by using internet explorer and typing in your problem, which you will then be led on a myriad of wrong answers to other problems. It might leave you wondering if we know what keywords are, but dont worry- we do. we just put no intelligence whatsoever in our search engine. We like frustrating you, it gives us immense pleasure, because we know you cant function in the business world unless you are using our highly virus prone outlook product. (here's a secret: we actually employ the people who write those viruses, we do it because its funny. You dont need a secure OS anyways, you need to buy more software. Buy, buy.

We care about your business, so please feel free to get frustrated and upset when our software by default leaves its ass wide open, for french hackers to gain domain administration privledges on your machine, then set up webservers for port sites because you have really fast bandwidth.

If you recieved windows XP with your computer, please call the manufacturer of the computer that you purchased from, because its their mothafuckin job to support our software. We make sure they can't survive without bundling our ugly, 1 billion process running in the background because we really need to have 5 multithreaded connections to your machine from our servers without your permission. If you bought your computer from Dell, you will probably talk to someone in india who barely speaks english, but knows 10x as much about windows, and 70 other operating systems than you do. Dont worry though, we guarantee if you ask your question or ask them to repeat themselves a minimum of 14 times, you will understand what they said. If purchased a toshiba, please be prepeared for hold times up to 17 hours, and again, you probably know more about computers and operating sytsems than we do, so why even call?

If you cannot boot up your computer, or access the bios, its not our fault.Nothing is our fault. Please re read the EULA you signed by purchasing your computer. We know you didnt agree to anything, but its just there so we dont have to actually hold any real liablity for anything we do. The fault Is yours for buying our product. We suggest if you want a stable, hardened, OS, that you download linux, we heard its pretty sweet. plus, all the software is free for linux, (because software engineeers really dont need to pay rent, eat food or anything, everything should be free ) or you can get a mac which is actually netbsd with pretty graphics. We know, unix is great, but we hate them because in JR high, we got in a fight once with UNIX and they kicked our ass sideways.

plus, if we made an OS that was well made, what do you think would happen? we wouldnt have anything to support anymore and then we wouldnt take more of your money. So its good business to sell 1/2 written software.

If all else fails, and you use a NON MICROSOFT PAY-US-TO-APPROVE YOUR DRIVERS product, dont worry. People will just get too scared to install your sofware, and then you won't get sales because of misimformation.

If you then decide to use a non microsoft, file recovery tool, expect it to take 12 hours to find out all your data is lost because you used our EFS.

Remember- 2 weeks of downtime because we dont know what "security" is, builds character. Just think of the great stories you can tell your grandkids, about how it was okay that you experienced major, fatal problems 6 times in 1 year using our operating system. If you were smart, you would have installed 13 virus scanners, 2 software firewalls, and purchased 2 large TANKS to protect your ports. Remember, its your job to make your computer usable.

Just promise you wont be upset if you lose your files because you encrypted them for safety, and now are gone.

If you spent 400 dollars to upgrade your copy of windows 2000, to XP, we thank you, and laugh at you at the same time, but then would be happy to provide you for free, of course after you wait on hold, a person on the other side of the phone to try to fix the problem for you, even though most likely, that person actually uses a etech-a-scetch to access the internet.

Thats okay, they will lie to you and you will feel okay for like, 5 minutes then not call us back for at least an hour. We were trying to take a nap, thank you very much.

We promise all future product releases will be very secure ( hahahhaha just kidding )

in the future, just back up remotely on a daily basis. Remember, even if you get a minor virus you will think your backup files will reinstall, thats just a trick we convince you we can do. Okay, we lie. It's okay though, because we are microsoft, everyone has to buy our crap. WE promise we will enter every market that we can steal market share from other companies, put them out of business, then release our crappy verision of their better product.

and finally, dont think about inventing anything, we own all the rights to all the US patents. For everything. Because remember, if you patent something, we will just patent 40 other things that can prove that we really own your ideas.

SO in conclusion- give us more money, we will give you more crap and keep breaking your machine.

But there is no doubt in your mind that what you are doing is right, and you will have no regrets.

as a user who has been fucked by telcos, watched wireless companies screw its customers, investors, employees and myself, and now is currently forced to either pay local loop charges and get dsl or pay a cable company- I have came to the recent conclusion that passing of laws like the new revisions to the digital millenium copyright act, or the rave act- is good! I hope they BOTH pass!

I know you are thinking, what crack are you smoking?

why do I like watching my rights erode away every day?

because more and more, all of us are getting to the breaking point. We are sick of corporate welfare. We are getting moe and more tired of candidates who represent business and not people. I will never vote again for a single republicrat :) I will always support new parties, that represent the people and the people's needs. Democraps and republiRich's represnt corporate america and the status quo.

let em pass shitty laws. Because soon, one of them will piss too many people off and we will throw their asses out.

Its proven by nature itself, you can only push someone or something so far before it breaks.

think about it this way. sure, microsoft will say, you have to use this hardware, and you cant do this or that or this...blah blah blah, and other manufacturers will make products to fall in line with the great big icky giant.

guess what will happen- users that dont want to buy into their bullshit will-

support companies that manufacture products and provide services without these stupid, ass backwards limitations.
They wont be able to pass laws that force manufacturers to infringe on personal rights. period, Its the constitution, and the bill of rights, that will in the end, protect us. As much as I hate the supreme court, they usually wont allow things to happen that completely ignore our rights.

The problem for corporate america is, there are places in the world like sweden where the people arent entirely focused around making money. There are people in this world who believe that sharing is not only an important part of human existence, but vital in building community. Look at the beauty of things like LINUX, that are FREE and in many ways far more badass than winblowz. COLLECTIVE involvement means collective benefits of the PEOPLE, NOT corporations. Look at researchers who openly share their research with others FOR THE BETTERMENT OF SOCIETY AS A WHOLE.

so yah, I run windows right now. I use a national ISP. I am not going to be using the isp for long, and will soon have a 7mbit connection to my house, and It will cost me around, oh, 100 bucks.Because of a community based concept.Did you know that if you buy bandwidth directly from a tier one on a backbone, that on average its about .20cents per MEGBIT ACCESS per MONTH? screw local loop - get yourself a nice BIG wireless backhaul. add some 802.11 flavor - and you got one bad ass fast network, that works good as a fiber network, for 1/1000th of the price:)

SO- When microSUCK makes some new products that infringe on my personal rights, I will drop them and anyone who attempts the same bullshit, same with anyone else who doesnt believe that sharing something isnt the equivalent of stealing. Corporate america has stolen enough from people. Its our turn to take back what is rightfully ours, which is our right to SHARE and our RIGHT TO PRIVACY and our RIGHT TO vote with our pocketbook.

Understand that most corporations only purpose is to serve the needs of their investors. to make profit. Eventually, people WILL wake up, and they will lose.

Sure, many people wont wake up. The suburban living, minivan driving, aol using, national media believing,
sucka's out there. They can have their mcdonalds and sizzler life for all I care.Let those who are ignorant
be ignorant.

In conclusion- you cant fix whats broken. Our political system is shot, core values are gone, and needs fixing.
Until the system of checks and balances is EQUAL, all fighting each stupid law will do is slow the inevitable breakdown of the system causing a new and more balanced system to emerge. So let it happen and people may eventually throw mud in their faces, and then we can go back to being what makes america a great place- freedoms.
Until then, I will keep pointing and laughing, rooting for the man or woman who represents me and my beliefs.

Look at it this way- remember how "somewhat" okay the clinton administration was? You see how bad a bush admininstartion is? We were nice and placated during slick willie's term, and now we are all getting pissed off. Nader was right, by him throwing the democrat vote, this next time people are going to be even more likely to vote for a liberal candidate.

Jeff
man, reading that later I must have really been out of my head.

no more crack for breakfast! no more posts! I promise!
At least I am laughing. I did for a moment. I hope someone did.

you see, spice alley is a house where some people live. Spicealley was founded by this man:
http://www.spicealley.net/peace/Pages/Image1.html (image stolen from www.spicealley.net) They went from a simple living situation to a creative entity, which mantra is "Spicealley isnt just about ruining everyone elses good time, its about us having a good time at the expense of others." They now have a "posse" based around the ownership of a stuffed animal called the catworm that is available at IKEA stores worldwide. I too was drawn to the catworm for its multifunction-cute-swedish design, plus I wanted to be cool like them. I was duly imformed I could not have one by members of the "alley" which now is a website, a large mailing list, and easily won the award in 2001 for the most annoyingly interesting camp @ pheonix festival. As you know, the 6 am games of joust (or was it pong, I didnt go ) drove many fest attendees to anger and near insanity. Spice alley unfortunately did not defend its title this year @ phoenix festival, which could have been some of the most incredibly interesting chaos assembled, as they would have had to battle the up and comers, chickenHED. (www.chickenhed.org or .com, too lazy and tired to check ) An anonymous source from TEAM SPICEALLEY even complimented chickenHED on their camp this year, saying it was the "BEST SHIT EVER MAN!!!" which under section 23.69.69.303. of the jaded ex raver for the state of Washington, that they forfeit their annoying soundsystem of the year title by default. I suggest next year a full on battle, head to head, WWF style. Wait! there is not next year!

nite!

BARDOITES, GET YOUR CHUNKY DUNKY ASSES IN GEAR! THE END IS NEIGH!

i THOUGHT my powers could protect me and the flock. however:

I felt a disturbance in the force a long time ago, but the darkside was clouding everything. I was blinded by the shroud of the ALLEY, the dark side, all that which makes people drink absinthe and yell obsenities at christian schoolkids. Pure MAYHEM.

on a dark and stormy night:

I went to the FINE HOME FURNISHINGS superduper store IKEA! We needed storage solutions for modern living, and the percieved stylish feel /yet KMART quality of IKEA, INC. After spending months beating off late into the night over swedish designed disposable couches, I couldnt take it anymore. I had to spend at the MOST, 20 pesos there. It was a mission from god.

Whilst casually shopping for innovative and highly flammable home furnishings and dinnerware: Something beautiful and mystical caught my eye.It- It COULDNT BE! IT WAS! My heart skipped a beat or three, and almost had a full blown MDMA abuse induced panic attack.

I had spotted in a corner, a section of the store with the beautful and rare worm displayed with the LOW LOW price of 9.99.I did a quick doublecheck, looked around, and it seemed everyone was quite oblivious to this rare, fluffy, creature of true enlightenment priced attractively at a 13 cents per month lease price. Nearby, an unsightly young gent tapped away on a laptop, gently bobbing his head to the music playing in his headphones. The coast looked clear. I gave the gang sign to my partner, for no cops in area/create diverision/sell more crack. She nodded, understanding my intent.

Like a Jedi in heat, I stealthly approached the catworm display, and had my partner, create a diversion by loudly declaring " I NEED HELP WITH FINDING THE RIGHT COLOR LAMPSHADE! HELP ME! PLEASE SOMEONE!!!" - then "20 DOLLAR ROCKS FO SALE!!!BITCHES AND HOES ONLY 12.99!"over her 1000 watt watch/megaphone, which was clearly audible to all of the 3 thousand shoppers throughout the 450,000 square foot facility. Here was my window of oppertunity :As she attempted to divert the attention of every man, woman and child within a 30 mile radius, I used my JEDI SHOPPER reflexes to catpult myself 40 feet horizonally through the air at the display rack.

The flash of a DORKsaber(tm) caught the corner of my eye, as the unsightly laptop user transmorgafied into VINCENTMEANIE, the dark lord of the NWRAVES list! My jedi instincts took over as our plastic weapons of doom met with sparks. Using bizzare, yet effective methods of the dark side, he battled me back away from the wormthatmakesanicepillowandisallknowing. I parried his verbal and physical blows, shouting, "THE CATWORM BELONGS TO ALL! RETURN THEM TO THEIR HOMELAND!" as he skillfully parried away my pathetic attempts with my deadly plastic toy saber, like a typical dark lord of all that which is dorky- he boldly declared.

"HE WHO CONTROLS THE SPICE! CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE!, I AM L33T!"

then, as I mustered all of my strength and jedi powers, to move him aside and gain the illustrious and all knowing wurm- he pushed me another 30 feet back from the target with a massive energy/ping of death hack:

"HAHAHAHAH young jedi, you do have the "spice" to be a catworm owner!"

then he cast a 4 point mana spell, declaring- "form of : car salesman!"

(insert tense climax music )

This would sadly, be my demise. I couldnt resist his power of creative/positive/sales suggestion. I was under his power now.

I dropped my plastic saber and whipped out my credit, debit, and sears card.

"MUSSSSSSSST BUY ANYTHING FOR Anyyyything......speeeeeeend monnnnnnney.........now.........never with casssssssssssh.........only credit..........credit GOOOOOOOD..."
i mumbled incoherently.

"how about a nice dresser? we have one on sale for 129.99 that will go GREAT with your furnishings!"

Like an idiot, I had picked this to be the one day that I left my SpiceAlley(tm) braintrick utilty boxers at home (shitstain from the heroin i did the night before) at home and was impervious to his use of mind control.

"uhh, your right, what do i need a fluffy, comforting, all knowing and all seeing beast of dominance for? I need a DRESSER! thanks MAN! take ALL my money, PLEASE? "

he smiled evilly and replied-

"now remember, make sure to buy it on credit because its only at 148% interest/day right now. thats only 19999.99 a month for 24 months!"

what a SWEET DEAL!, I thought!

Obviously underneath his power of suggestion, (I wouldnt ever buy a dresser, I would just shoot a small immigrant family, like a normal american, and steal it, DUH! ) I promptly grabbed my partner in stupidity, walked over, and bought a nice bedroom set for 200,000,000 dollars.

Then, after I had wandered over to the "fine furniture" section,
and returned to where they beautiful and sexy catworms
were displayed, to my slight dismay, had all dissapeared.Still under
his control, I didnt care.

Obviously his mind trick had worked in a 400 mile blast zone because my sidekick, Kelly Botan-fu-inator, went over and negoiated a purchase of a nice set of dinner knives for 7.5 billion bhat. (she imported 3 containers from thailand, DUH! ) she was trying to collect them all.

The rest, seems like a dream. Its too fuzzy to remember. Except for the midget elephant sex. I will always remember that, it was spot on.

We awoke, what must have been 3 months later, because the seasons had changed (from rainy to kinda rainy ) having felt as if i was under some kind of strange spell. A pile 30 feet high of dirty DKNY and KENNETH COLE Clothing littered the floor of our 500 square foot apt. Reciepts from every store known to man, along with used flight coupons were piled up 10 feet high and rising on the desk. The answering machine beeped, and clicked. The readout showed, 3,254,321 messages. I grogglily leaned over and scanned thru the caller ID HP/LINUX box, 80% of the messages from visa, mastercard, discover, diners club, sears, bon marche, and 372 other credit card companies. Mom called as well. once. We must have been late with a payment or 2000, no big deal. How long had I been sleeping?

I looked up to see that my dresser and all our furniture had fallen apart. Niiiiice.

I am 3.5 billion dollars in debt. My cat is running around my house in leather chaps and attempting to assfuck a frozen turkey. He is chasing it with a huge cat erection. Strange, He usually only chases squirrels.

I sense a conspiracy.

I HATE IKEA.

Damn you, SPICEALLEY, for making IKEA THE ONLY PLACE OF ACCESS FOR ALL THAT IS TRUE POWER IN THE UNIVERSE!

yay sundazed! that was fun! WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING? FAQ for those who care why and what.

Since I had thought that I had been pretty obvious to everyone about what my plans were for my live set/ dj destructoretardo set, I didnt think I had to write a FAQ.

judging by crowd reaction, including the people involved with sundazed as well, its neccessary.

1)	I can mix very well, however I was intentionally mixing records poorly, as well as playing really obnoxious, noisy records. If you had read any of my previous writings about my experiences locally as a DJ you would understand that this performance was about me shedding a former self. So by mixing records carelessly and poorly it was intended to display my feelings of negativity and anger directed towards the DICHOTOMY of DJ culture and the underlying bullshit of it.
2)	I gave each record away for a few reasons. First and foremost, It was to show that records are not necessary for one to be a DJ. Being a DJ doesn’t need to be a consumer driven activity. It was also to challenge people to be open minded about music and technology in general. I can go over this later with you if you like, offline.(email : rising35@attbi.com )
3)	If you were wondering why sometimes the laptop portion of my set didn’t sound perfect, sounds came in too loud, or what not, its because live performance isn’t always perfect, especially when you can’t see, or pre-que sounds. Due to difficulty arranging transport to the event, I was a little bit late.
4)	If I seemed rude and you talked to me, its because I was in a really bad mood, which was rather aggravated by some personal stuff- so I apologize.
5)	Some of the underlying reasons behind my thought process :
•	music should not be controlled by record companies of any sort. Technology is at a point where artists should be able to make a sustainable living selling their art via the web or direct. There is no need for corporation controlled art. Record companies are in the business of screwing artists, and it needs to change. Support this change by paying artists directly, not lining record company pockets. Seek out and promote direct sales of music, to help promote this sustainable economic model! If you download an mp3 for free and you like it, find an artists website by using google or what not, and offer them money for it! Help eliminate the abuse of musicians by not supporting corporate music!

•	Packaging and media are wasteful, unnecessary, and just a marketing tool. Do not buy music from record labels or stores that do not support artists. If a store or a label is not open minded about alternate forms of distrubution, help create demand by requesting it, and encouraging others.

•	DJ culture does not currently support the ARTISTS that create the music, in a sustainable way. They support record companies, distributors, and DJ’s. Support the ART, support the ARTISTS by encouraging more intelligent distrubution that reliquishes control from the labels to the ARTIST.

•	DJ’S NEED to be more open minded about technology as a means of creative interaction with their audience. Sure, tradition is one thing- but if you can use technology as a means of artisic endeavor, to a more creatively freeing method of live performance, they why would you stick to the old method? More creative freedom means more ability to innovate. Not to mention the fact that digital media without packaging (mp3's, downloaded music ) would create less stress on the enviorment, cost less, and provide a more sustainable economic model for artists. After all, its the music that you pay for. open your mind.

With that said, I am not looking to argue with people about my opinions, I however, am choosing to just tell you what mine are, and accept yours. Economic evolution will eventually change the markets the same way, The choice is yours if you wish to be more creatively free and perform. As ritchie hawtin said over a year ago, digital music will seperate true DJ'S from professional shoppers. True talent will become more glaringly obvious versus hype. Very soon, the methods of production will be reduced to the cost of 200 viynl records, and have the same actual quality and characteristics as 100 thousand dollars in studio gear. Think about it.

the evolution of the chilipimp:

warning- boring self analysis filled with armchair psychology and other senseless ‘s dribble- only read if everyone’s else’s journals are really boring! I warned you!

For 8 years now I haven't quite figured out why it is that I either suck so horribly at DJ'ing, or that overall seattle musically and I never seem to be even close to being on the same page. Granted, I will never be able to mix like a derrick carter (deaf in one ear, try that on for size ) however, over the past 3-4 years I have learned to work within my abilities. Good enough so I can pull off a 2 hour mix for recording purposes, with no noticeable mistakes. So in general, I have eliminated mixing as a reason for the lack of opportunity.

To analyze this problem properly, we must take in a few factors. first- my history as a dj. (or wannabe dj ) I started like many did in the early days with ambient because as anyone smart can figure out, no beats means the ability to mix without the perception of mistakes by listeners. Grew bored quickly as it became hard to find beatless records and the fact that trip hop was blossoming, and I really liked it a lot. Did the typical new dj thing of buying far too many records to compensate for lack of ability- plus, being a high roller* at the time, it was something to waste money on that could compensate for my lack of true artistic endeavors. After some bizarre life changes, ended up in Dallas where I found that I was soon playing somewhat consistently at events, by playing house and down-tempo. I actually played more that summer out than any other, for some odd reason. It also should be mentioned that I had seasoned myself earlier on with a year long stint as a mobile dj, where I learned some valuable skills (that I later forgot) of how to control crowds and energy levels at events. Every new DJ should seriously put some time in the mobile trenches- teaches you a lot about how to play to crowds and keep them sedated.

When I returned to the damp confines of seattle- I returned to find the music I was into at the time was basically the same crap everyone else was playing in Seattle. As I never felt comfortable being someone who played music that a whole city of DJ’S played exclusively, I gave away my house records, and looked for something else that I found more interesting. Being an ADD adult means you cant do something for more than 15 minutes without getting bored anyways. Thru a friend, I rediscovered a previous love for trance. (don’t laugh, trance used to be good and not shitty like it is now ) Once again, I never really felt as If I was able to communicate with the crowds. Arguably, my mixing had grown worse ( I later learned that its hard to accurately mix music, without easily discernable percussion, with one good ear ) But, I trudged on, making sure I still played from time to time by organizing my own events, or events that because of my position within the group they were forced to let me play. (see: sundazed ) Still not feeling it, the communication between dancer and DJ, I plodded on, grew bored as trance became utterly too commercial and formulaic.

I later reinvented myself (or tried to ) as a techno dj because I found that techno’s rawness of sound combined with easy of mixing was a lot more fun. Plus it was a lot more socially acceptable at the time  Got a heck of a lot better technically, still didn’t feel it, and then realized it was a geographic issue as well because, I really had a lot of fun playing out of town. its amazing how much easier it is to get gigs OUT of town than at home.

After my ill fated agency tanked, I grew bitter again. Why couldn’t I get people to enjoy my music like I do? So of course, in proper form I stopped playing banging throw your hands in the techno and thanks to a few san Franciscans, found new music. This one had some potential! I like it enough that when I hear other people playing I enjoy it almost as much as playing it myself.mmmmmmmm Electro. Once again, when the few opportunities in this town presented themselves, to play, I didn’t get response I wanted as well.

As many read in my recent posts, politics comes into play a bit when you are a DJ. ARGUABLY however, just because I have about 3 – 5 honest to god real friends anymore doesn’t really mean that I am universally hated- just not liked all that much.
Seattleites never really hate anyone, they just get annoyed with people they don’t like and tolerate them, hoping they will eventually read their minds, and go away.

Still- when playing locally in environments where everyone there knows who I am and has had some bad experience dealing with me, I don’t get the feeling that politics are the reason why I don’t feel like I can get the dance floor moving.

So FINALLY to the realization : After sitting at LSC barely tolerating the music, I realized something I had long forgot- 99 percent of club going people don’t want to listen to anything that makes them think. Like my momma once told me, “god grants us a few gifts”, but not all. Most people who are considered to be “hot” or “attractive” usually are pretty damn stupid. Very few are able to pull off both, which easily explains the popularity of really easily consumable music. Since the pretty people really only focus on how they look, and that takes up most of their god given abilities, They need really sugar coated, simple, dance music. They don’t want to be challenged, just spoon fed stuff they can easily digest. What made me wake up to this fact was when Jess AKA Kundabuffer came on after Andrew Cox took an hour break, and promptly played stuff that was still arguably fluff, but still too complex for them to understand. Jess is one of those people who feverishly has perused DJing, he also feels that he has yet to feel a considerable level of dancefloor acknowledgement here. I think that’s why we are such good friends- we both share the same pain. It then hit me: HERE is GUY who went to YALE and majored in math- no matter if he tries to dumb down what he is doing, he is still intellectually a giant compared to the room. It’s like a human trying communicate with a chimp- you can talk to them, it may seem that they are understanding on some level what you are saying- but you know they cant understand a damn thing you are saying. You have to be a PHD zoologist and animal behaviorist to communicate with them.

We finally escaped the although visually stimulating, but musically unsatisfying environment for more appealing dig’s at the newly remodeled aristocrats. We arrived to hear some rather challenging and chin scratching jungle via one of the only talented drum and bass djs in the city, playing tracks that were in strange time signatures, that seemed to appeal to those g33ky and reasonably intelligent (the typical seattle lack of attractive women at clubs in full effect ) individuals just fine. Some were happily drunk, bouncing around on the dancefloor, most in conversation milling around, socializing. When the night ended -after debating politics and watching the 2 promoters play a deadlocked game of chess at the promoters house until 6 am- I stumbled home, still thinking about how I still couldn’t get people’s ASSES shakin on the floor, or at least providing adequate entertainment to merit additional bookings. I am sure that politics are 80 percent of the lack of opportunities I have had to learn- however you still have to play music people like. Maybe if I could make something new that people just had to hear, no matter how much people would privately give the promoter shit for letting me play. This however, would doubtfully happen. Its more important to be socially acceptable than to be the best DJ- just be likeable, which I MOST definitely am not. Infamous, most absolutely. Not a likeable person, however. Most mellow Seattle people can’t handle conflict and usually just avoid people they don’t like. So If I wanted to be reaaaaaaaaaly
pushy, I could possibly get gigs, but in 14 years, I would actually like to be asked to play for once. Its so much nicer when they really want you in the building.

I then finally realized, just like in JR high, I was an oddball. In Jar High- I was an oddball By being a jock who took AP math classes. I had no social clique to fit in with. Then- or now. I am stuck in some random middle universe where very few reside socially and taste wise. Smart people are supposed to like smart people things, and stupid people are just well, supposed to remain stupid and oblivious. I am neither, too smart to enjoy stupid people, and not cool enough for the smart folks.

Musically, you cannot be both. I like the melodic structure and sheer stupidity of some pop music. I also love truly intelligent and well thought out music. I could never write pop music, as in it’s pure form, is pretty bland and mindless. However, dancing is supposed to be fun, or at least I grew up believing. Back in the years of yonder, the late 80’s it was okay to be slightly cheesy or hokey with your music, and because it was so new it was still intellectually acceptable. On the flip side, I couldn’t ever take dance music so seriously as to write someone like Swayzak would write, without a twinge of humor or at least self depreciation. Not to mention that glitch and IDM seems vapid and pointless in a much worse way- By taking itself so seriously it has invalidated any value.
Sure, creativity is great, however I find that music still needs to go beyond simple texture, rhythm and tone. I don’t really find anything particularly fascinating about being so experimental that a person would spend hours constructing an individual tone. Experimental music ISNT supposed to be dance music, unless you consider flailing your arms around and running into walls dancing, that is. As a wise young artist once told me, he doesn’t like music that has NO ASS to it, and IDM doesn’t make your ass do much of anything. Lacking that essential BOOTY SHAKE, just makes it something like abstract pottery. Its not useful for anything other than aesthetics. Not to mention the pretension that goes along with minimal techno/dim. Pretentious attitudes are far worse than any oblivious Bellevue girl at LSC. At least she is having a good time being a dick tease, flirting, and showing her warez. The technosnob constantly reminds himself subconsciously how stupid everyone else is for not liking what he likes, and really doesn’t get it. As hard as you try, you cant intellectualize music that intended purpose is to help people forget what’s going on in their lives and provide release. So it betta have some ASS!

In Seattle, you truthfully cant walk in the middle ground and find acceptance or happiness in either side. Which is why electroclash and the like is so damn appealing- pop sensibility with retro cool/g33k snobbish flavor, but not afraid to make fun of itself. Its not just music- its all about stupid fashion, retarded 80’s glamour, art galleries, and big dirty bass lines. however it has none of the early 80’s preoccupation with depression and social malaise. Its synth pop with ego.

As enjoyable as it is now, I think it can get even better. Campier. Sillier.

Which brings me to my final point. Come hear Chilipimp this Sunday. 5 pm, golden gardens park, in Seattle. I promise zero pretension, funny outfits, along with your daily recommended dosage of BASS. plus, show up around 5 pm and get pegged with records as I play them, then segueway into what he feels is the future of DJ oriented performance : remixing on the fly on my ultra fly, big blue laptop. For future chilipimp performances: I will not just stand behind a laptop, but have ridiculous and entertaining performers for you to stare at because you have to see someone doing something. And we think ridiculousness is good.

*high roller – a person who has a carefree lifestyle due to the abundance of UNEARNED
income, but still thinks their income somehow makes them of a higher social status.

ariel-

In the past I have more than respected your views and opinions.
HOWEVER- by writing a sniping, titillatiing article for the weekly all you
have possibly gained out of it is a small paycheck for yourself and possibly made the organizers lives a lot more difficult. You should feel proud if they get denied the necessary permits in the future, GREAT JOB!

you may beleve and profess that stuff like that is necessary in promoting your ideals, that things like this should be more OPEN.
Writing an article like this however just shows your "im older now and jaded because blah blah blah..." instead of promoting any positive change.you also barely focused on the postive aspects, at least ones that the general public would percieve as positive.

I didnt see a lot of OPEN SEX.Or any for that matter. yes, mezbians were in full court, half naked as usual. big deal. From your article's portrayal however, people were running around buck naked having sex everwhere you looked.Great Job! like any starving journalist, you painted the truth to be that which represented the direction of your article, not the truth. in order to SELL your article it seems that you focused on very little truth and just sensationalism. Maybe your review would have been better suited for your personal journal than a 70 thousand copy circulated publication.

I got offered drugs maybe once. Which honestly is a lot less than you would at a stupid NAF event. I really dont think that was an accurate portrayal at all.

Finally, YOU bitched about chickenhed. Whatever yo- I really LIKED their saturday morning wake up call. You once again portrayed that the entire community was upset with what they were doing, when it simply was your own whiny bullshit. I will even bet that you would enjoy knowing that they recieved a threatening letter from some anonymous person who was so offended, like yourself. People like you need to invest in earplugs next time. Even worse, I figure you probably think that only lite 105 fm sounds are appropriate.Just because its not chakra healing ambient bullshit doesnt mean it isnt good.

This article to me was just another remider to me that very few writers have true journalistic integrity, and generally just want to get paid, and are willing to use sensationalism to serve their own personal goals.
When you whine next time about whoring yourself for corporations,
think about the whoring you did by writing that crap and the people you may have affected in the process. At least if you are whoring at a big evil corporation, you arent out there spewing crap like this that could end up being quite harmful to those involved.

Chili

what I did-

Arrived late on friday night, to get set up and camped. We basically didnt get everything dialed @ our camp until pretty damn late, so we wandered around to find a dissapointing number of people dancing at each of the systems. It was however 3 in the morning, So I suppose it wasnt a big deal. I initally was miffed because we were camped with a bunch of people I didnt know well and was wishing we would have found some more of our freinds. There were several people I didnt even see over the course of the weekend, but I guess that just shows me how utterly huge the place was and how much was going on.

Wandered around on friday night to check out each one of the systems (except dirty steve's, and camp cooler, I didnt know where they were )

The thing that stuck with me the most on friday night was how utterly cool chickenhead was. And after the whole weekend, I pretty much decided that chickenhead ruled all over all the other systems, for a few simple reason which I will go into later.

After wandering around for a bit, we crashed and were woken up saturday morning with the intoerable heat in our tent. So we popped out, ate some food, and bounced around for a bit.

We then headed into town for supplies we had forgotten, (liquor), and
got back in time for the dancesafe auction which was quite the hoot.
I finally figured out where some of my freinds were camped, kicked it there for a bit, then when I was wandering over back to camp because
I would have to wait to play wierd mp3's off my laptop, I ran into a freind who imformed me I should go play on the main stage. Evidently the dj who was on there had been playing going on 4 hours and was kinda getting sick of it and at least wanted a break. We went back and forth with this idea, me because I wasnt asked by the people running the show, and because I wasnt completly prepeared.

After playing there I headed over to play on Kyle’s setup @ jadecore. I found that set to be more entertaining personally to play (the mainstage was pretty damn dead ) but I also
realized that it’s a pretty bad idea to play live if you cant preque your sequences. I learned a lot about playing live at PH, and next time most definitely it will sound a LOT better.
I’m hoping, that is.

It was nice for the short period of time we were there, and I think playing live was a very
rewarding and enjoyable experience, definitely worth it to me even if there isn’t anyone
around to enjoy it directly in front of me. Everyone seemed to be having a really good time, and Kelly even had a good time, enough so that she wants to go out to that party
in South Dakota at the end of the month.

I met a lot of nice new kids, and had a great time sharing the experience with my good friends. I think in the future I might have preferred it if we were all camped in a more central area, but next year I and Kelly will definitely plan more in advance. That was
more my fault than anything, really.

EVENT REVIEW-

pro’s:
not a DJ clusterfuck- lots of places to play and people to meet, almost not enough DJS
and performers!

the costumes for the auction were great, Kim and D3’S were by far the best.

weather was almost perfect

pretty drive there and almost back  (car broke down on the way back, but that was okay I guess )

ambient area, main stage set up were really done right, decorated proper, visuals were great, ect ect ect. lots of thought and effort went into them.

camp cooler – really comfy and intimate feeling!

novatron- great muzik, nice camp set up, live performance = always better than dj sets!

but the #1 best thing of phoenixfest was:

CHICKENHED. For those of you who were upset with what they played, or whatever,
you are just a bunch of mamby pamby grumps.Next time you go to big outdoor like that, bring some earplugs if that is going to bother you! I woke up Saturday morning to hear what was probably the most creative and interesting set’s from anyone that weekend,
and was smiling my way through slumber. Also, their camp set up was by far the most funny, creative, and enjoyable part of the weekend for me. As GK told me today on msn,
“I want CHICKENHED at every party!” Not only do I concur, but I think that if promoters, djs, and artists don’t start getting the underlying message of what they
were doing, events will not live on past our mid thirties even. Parties need to be
back to the roots- not spiritual (this isn’t church) not serious, FUN! REMEMBER
WHEN YOU WENT TO A PARTY AND DANCED AND HAD FUN? AND LAUGHED? anyways, it was refreshingly nice.

cons:
Okay, instead of posting a bunch of complaints, I am going to post the very few but I think important things to consider for events next time. Therefore giving those involved In the planning of it useful information and critical analysis so that they might fix them next year and make it better. Please don’t get me wrong also- Phx fest KICKED ASS. wouldn’t it be rad if it kicked even MORE ass?

1) overall layout of the event-
Well, that place was really spread out. Enough so that I barely spent very much time
at each camp, and missed a lot of people. Which brings me to my point. couldn’t
phoenix festival be set up a little less spread out? One way to do this would be to
have the main stage in the center of a ½ circle area. The audio would be pointing
north, for the main area, and all the other systems would be surrounding it in a ½
circle fashion, pointing away from each other to minimize sound bleed. Sure you might get a little bleed between systems, but really, Would you rather walk ½ a mile?
Also, If for some reason this setup doesn’t work, that’s fine, but then how about this?
How about charge extra to people who want to basically catch rides on a “people mover,
or vehicle that ferry’s kids around to each system. I would pay an extra, 20-30 bucks to not have to walk everywhere and miss so much stuff. Its not that I am lazy, or others are,
its just a time thing. Sure, it might be an insurance issue which is why you could easily
have people sign waivers. you could run the thing during the day every 45 min or so, and every ½ hour for about 2/3 of the night. Finding drivers shouldn’t be hard, as lots of people don’t mind helping.

Another idea would be to have the main market area or nest in a more central camping area. It seemed that most people camped up by the parking lot, and by having the market or bazaar surrounding it, instead of between the majority of the camps and the stages areas, down below. So if it was more centrally located in the heart of the camping area,
then maybe more people would have used it to hang out in during the day.

2) Diversity of music and sound systems.
hmmmmmmm.

you know, I really did enjoy myself, however I was kinda curious as to why-
4 out of 9 systems were primarily IDM or goa. Now I know you had starseed playin some
house choons, and oneself connect was doing a variety of stuff, and yes, novatron was well, novatron, and chickenhed did the weirdness-
But almost half that was dedicated to PSYTRANCE AND IDM? I know you guys like
that stuff a lot, but maybe have a lot more diversity if you are going to limit the number
of systems? Just an idea. Also, It would have been helpful if when you got there, you got a sheet with lineup times for each camp, that way you can check out the stuff you want to see and not miss anything.

That’s about it. Overall it still was one of the best parties I have been to in ages.

Kudos!

GREAT TO BE BACK! time for BSP OF THE WEEK!! or better yet, the shredding of the bsp of the week....

Since most promoters aren’t usually the most educated and
skilled writers, I usually reserve the shred action for those who truly make a
mockery of a decent piece of email marketing. However, This
lovely BSP was written by THE EDITOR of a local magazine.

The idiocy displayed here by the writer, makes me really
question why someone who barely can compose a sentence, is allowed to write,
and EDIT a
local journal. Money can’t buy you talent or job skills, as this BSP shows.

Heya peeps:

Normally I have no problem with the
informal greetings that is usually prefacing some spam I receive.

That is, if the greeting is funny,
or doesn’t sound like white guys trying to be P-diddy.

“Peeps” is not a word used to
describe people, they are marshmallow confections that
look like small baby chicks.

Here's a heads up for our first very special MINTY party this Saturday, July

13 @ Re-bar...

Thanks for the reminder. *rolls
eyes* I did only receive this 3 times in email.

Marc de Breyne & Noah Frank (Ohm Grown Records,
Toronto)

Brent Laurence (Tilted Records)

DJ Recess (Minty)

Hailing us from Toronto,

Okay, what do you mean, they are
HAILING US?

So they are trying to flag us down
like a cab?

“HEY BUDDY! Or
someone who takes music from different backgrounds, and merges ideas and sounds
from those backgrounds and creates new sound.
Most likely however, it’s 2 very white, very boring DJ’S who make and
play music that rips off black artists from the 60’s, and 70’s. So, if you are
going to write a BSP, please think of some new terms to describe your artists
you are attempting to sell.

Also, Do
you realize your magazine uses the term “multi ethnic” and “diverse” when
describing just about every musical genre, record, and person? Maybe it’s just
the

crap you personally attempt to “write”, but could you please just
hire a real editor who would send your writers and yourself back to 10th
grade writing class? Besides Matt Corwine’s, and Kris
Moon’s articles, most of the junk you have printed was barely even readable,
let alone PRINTABLE.

across the continent for a very
special MINTY party.

Since you have called it a “very
special” party twice now, I am assuming that it’s a party to raise money for
“special people” or more, for a special reason? So it’s a party for
developmentally disabled people then?

Having

earned much respect and admiration in Toronto¹s hot, hot deep house scene,

Using a word twice doesn’t convey
the information any better.

their latest full length CD
release, Brasserie Aix, was co-produced and

written by them together for Canada¹s Ohm Grown Records.

What does this have to do with Toronto’s House scene? Why does this even matter?

Noah has also produced with Chorduroy
Music on their Stealth Jazz EP released on Seattle¹sown Viva! Recordings.

So he makes salsa house, and has some friends who own
label’s, as well as can use a sampler. That’s SPECIAL!

Having both released tracks on Play Record¹s FloorPlay

compilation CD series, they have played out with the likes of Rick Preston,

Carl Craig, LaFleche, Kenny Glasgow, Ms. Honey D. and
Patrick "Pedro"

Paredes.

Comment for promoters, agents, artists out there- No one CARES who YOU HAVE PLAYED WITH.
This isn’t information that matters, and actually, If
this is in someone’s bio, I just assume that they are barely out of 9th
grade. Arguably, any DJ who plays records has probably shared a bill with 10
times as many quality artists than this.

Who cares! This isn’t going to motivate me to buy your product!

We invite you to a night of sexy grooves served Canadian
style,

*Giggles*

So then, SEXY
BACON?

I HATE IT HOW PROMOTERS ALWAYS TRY
TO CALL SOMETHING SEXY, OR REFER TO WHERE SOMEONE’S FROM IN ORDER TO SELL THEIR
PRODUCTS!

Saying the word sexy, doesn’t make
something sexy. I am sure it’s not going to make people jump up and run out to
your event, either. Also telling people where they are from really doesn’t sell
either. All that says is you were stupid enough to fly this person here

to act as a human jukebox for the evening, and you really hope
cute girls show up.

complete with pretty people,

(coke whores and plastic
people, who think that your attempt at a magazine is valid- when its just a
bunch of flyers with maybe one or 2 well written articles ) Redundant
as well. Plus, I don’t think you know lots of pretty people, that would
show up to support your magazine. How about, complete with pretty STUPID
people?

pure wholesome licks of deep house

Sounds like ice cream, not music.
Since when is sexy music also wholesome music?

My grandma is wholesome, not very
sexy. You get my drift, I’m hoping. Probably not.

with visuals by Tracer and full
MINTY production.

Also look into the meaning of
“redundancy” when writing. Someone hire a real editor!!!!!

Wait! You are the editor and the
publisher, anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

10p-2a/21+

Stellar sound by: Green Dragon

Visuals by: Tracer

Dude! Redundant! You already said
this! Aaaaaaaaaaaaarg! !!!!!!

Also, the Pretty Parlor girls are going to be
featuring their signature

Seattle style all night long.

What the hell is this supposed to
mean??? And what the fuck is seattle style, flannel and REI WEAR?

Bring or fill-out at the door this month's reader survey and
receive $5 off

the cover charge instantly!

No, thank you.

Gift packages for the 1st 50 paid guests in the door.

What, are you like the Bon Marche’ fragrance department now? “free
ugly poorly made bag with purchase!” Wow man, I really want some free crap that
I will just throw in the trash!

see: www.mintymagazine.com for this month's
flyer.

“see our
website that is down because we didn’t pay for our hosting”

MINTY afterhours
at the Bohemian.

When/why/where AAAAAAAAARG who cares
you just don’t get it, never mind.

Rock on!

Dial a Cliché!

Im using our product to connect while sitting in the back seat of jess's car on our way to pheonix festival.

I would say its time again for me to bust out some witty shit and diss on the masses of seattle, but arguably, I really amd just going to go and have a good time with my freinds this weekend. Maybe something typical seattle sketch will happen and i can post the details.

otherwise, you can see me performing a "DJ" set @ pheonnix festival sunday day for sundazed.
I will be showing people how utterly redicluously cool ableton 1.5 is, by playing a 1.5 hour dj set which is 100 percent automated and mixed for you.

pretty funny shit.

later.
